Drawing on his experience designing low-cost housing in post-industrialisation Denmark, Arne Vodder was particularly renowned for his nuanced approach to wood. Born in Denmark in 1926 he was trained by Finn Juhl who went on to become a lifelong friend and business partner. Although outside of Scandinavia Vodder's work is not as well-known as contemporaries such as Juhl or Hans J. Wegner, his modest but highly functional pieces encapsulate all the desirable qualities of Danish mid-century design. His interest in craftsmanship and durability was matched by his desire to use mass-production techniques to get those qualities to the public. Vodder's work has been recognized at the Milan Triennale and Danish Carpentry Guild.
"Design must be useful and aesthetically beautiful. For example in a chair, you should be able to sit properly. And formally, it is important to me that the design is nice or beautiful to look at."
